The Book of the Divine is for 2 to 4 players and takes about 2 hours to play. In the game, players take on the roles of demigods who are trying to prevent a catastrophe that will end the world. The game is heavily based on mythology and features gods and creatures from various pantheons.

To begin, each player creates a character using a character sheet. Each character has a set of stats that determine their abilities, as well as a selection of skills. Players also select one of six classes for their character: Fighter, Rogue, Mage, Priest, Paladin, or Ranger.

The game is played out in turns with each player taking one turn at a time. On a player's turn they can perform one action and one bonus action. There are four types of actions: interacting with objects, attacking an opponent, casting a spell, or using a skill.

Interacting with objects generally involves trying to open doors, search through containers, or pick up items. Attacking an opponent can be done either with a weapon or with magic spells. Casting spells generally requires spending mana points which are gained by defeating enemies or by resting. Using skills usually involves attempting tasks such as disarming traps or picking locks.

Players can also choose to move around the environment during their turn. However, they can only move a certain number of squares per turn and they cannot move through walls or other obstacles. The goal is to navigate the environment and reach the objectives in order to complete the level.

Combat in The Book of the Divine is turn-based and takes place on a square grid battlefield. Each creature has their own movement grid which shows how far they can move each turn. On each player's turn they can choose to either attack an opponent or cast a spell. Spells typically affect all creatures within a certain radius whereas attacks are only effective against opponents within melee range.

When two creatures collide, both take damage equal to the amount rolled on two six-sided dice (2d6). If one creature has more than double the hit points of the other then that creature automatically wins the battle without rolling for damage dice (this Protects From Death ability applies even if one creature has lower hit points). The winner of the battle then gets to decide what happens to the defeated creature; typically they will either be killed or captured and imprisoned by the victor
